September 20, 2024 Lower South

With class in session for a month now, many new units were introduced to the students throughout this week! Each day, the children become more and more acclimated to the classroom environment and continually show a passion for learning. The students were introduced to the following new units: geography, botany, and word study.

In geography, students will be able to take the knowledge they learned about land and water forms and apply it to the Mandala Map unit. The Mandala Maps are an interactive Montessori material which allows children to label where different land and water forms are located on a map. Some land and water forms include lakes, archipelagos, gulfs, isthmuses, straits, islands, mesas, peninsulas, and more!

For language, students were presented a lesson on syllables. This unit is a part of the word study curriculum and encompasses work that involves children taking word or picture cards and placing each card under the correct syllable label. Some of these words range from having one syllable to five syllables. There are also works on the word study shelf that involves children matching up different words that contain the same amount of syllables. These are commonly called “word trains” or “syllable trains”. This unit not only helps children learn to break apart words but also promotes decoding and reading fluency skills.

Aside from learning about new geography and language concepts, the children have been learning about the different parts of a plant on the botany shelf in the classroom. This week, students were able to begin uncovering details about two specific plant parts, the roots and the stem. Throughout the next few weeks, students will be able to explore the parts of roots and the stem along with their important functions. In addition, students will be able to explore different types of roots and different types of stems. A few types of roots include tap roots, adventitious roots, aerial roots, and tuberous roots. A few types of stems include herbaceous, aerial, and underground stems.

Have a peaceful and blessed weekend!
