We are enjoying the beautiful fall weather outdoors this week. The cool weather has been a welcome relief from the heat that we had earlier this school year. Students have also been aware of the falling leaves and noticed their parts that were introduced last week during our Botany lesson.
In the classroom, we have introduced several new units. Our new Math Unit is on Greater Than, Less Than. Students are reviewing and practicing this unit with numbers into the thousands. Our Geography unit is focused on the cardinal directions and reading a map. Finally, students have been given a lesson on Common and Proper Nouns. This unit will be helpful when writing during Writer’s Workshop.
Something exciting for this school year is that we are introducing some practical life skills in the kitchen. Our first session was on Wednesday. Each month, several students from each lower classroom will have an opportunity to cook and produce some edible food for their classmates. This week our “cooks” made some delectable moon pies. We hope that this will encourage our “cooks” to help out more in your family kitchens. There is so much to learn from a cooking experience.
Finally, our trip to Kenwood Elementary was a wonderful adventure. It was fun for our students to go as a whole school community and visit a different school atmosphere. Author/illustrator Jarrett Lerner was a delight. He kept us all entertained and hopefully sparked an interest in future graphic novel writers.
