Another busy week in Lower Elementary. The students continue to practice and master skills in language and math and progress through those work areas. In addition to being introduced and exploring the culture areas in our classroom.
This week in history we are studying the Days of the Week in Lower North and the Months of the Year in Lower South. In these units the students will learn, practice and review the order and the origin of these subjects. Along with this unit, we always study the month that we are currently in. The students build the calendar including the month, days of the week and the number of days. A book goes along with each month that allows for further research including the holidays or special events that occur within that month.
Botany also has some new work. It is a continuation of the leaf shapes and parts of the leaf the students have already discovered. Activities will go further into the parts of the leaf by specifying particular veins, margins and shapes. Some activities will also allow identification of tree names by the leaf shape.
Lastly, on the math unit shelf children were able to start exploring work on expanded notation. Some of the works involve students taking numbers written in standard form, building these numbers with small number cards, and then writing the numbers in expanded form. This work helps children to understand how to break down larger numbers based on their place value.
Have a great weekend!
