May 9, 2025 Lower North

The month of April has quickly come to an end and May is in full swing! The lower elementary teachers and students have been hard at work in preparation for this final month of the school year. Many new units were presented throughout this week. New to our word study shelf is the unit on abbreviations. Though this unit may sometimes be a challenging concept for students to grasp, it is still a popular interest. While studying abbreviations, children learn how to shorten many words within their vocabulary from names of months, days, types of measurement, and much more.

In addition, students were introduced to their last math unit topic of the school year. This unit teaches children all about measurement. During the month of May, students will be able to explore different variations of measurement, including non-standard and standard. They will learn and review different measuring tools, from rulers to measuring cups to scales and balances. Students will also review how to use a ruler to measure in inches and centimeters along with learning about other standard measurements such as, gallons, cups, ounces, pounds, grams, and kilograms. This unit tends to be a favorite for many students as it relates to real-life skills like cooking and architecture!

Lastly, this week, all the 3rd-year students had the opportunity to visit the Bowling Green Community Center for a special bike safety assembly. This assembly is hosted by the Bicycle Safety Commission. During this fun presentation, The Right Direction BMX team performed a demo for the students showing off exciting tricks along with discussing important bike safety information. The 3rd-year students look forward to experiencing this safety program each year!

Hoping you have a wonderful weekend along with sending happy thoughts to all the mothers in our MSBG community as you celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend!
