We ended the first month of the year with a big chill, but we are staying warm in the classrooms with activities, lessons, and new work.  We introduced a new

science unit on the weather.  Maria Montessori believed that it was important to spark the imagination of the 6-9 year old to open up the world to them.  The new unit on weather will spark our students’ learning by introducing them to how patterns of wind, water, and air affect the weather.  This unit will include how the force of air causes so many different types of weather including hurricanes and tornadoes.  Activities will include types of clouds and the water cycle too.  Perhaps, this work will interest one of our students to someday be a meteorologist!
On the language shelf we have introduced the students to antonyms.  Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings.  Many of the word study units have fun activities to learn new vocabulary for further use in writing and communication.  Learning new words is not tiring but engaging!
