It has been a wonderful first week of school! Your children are extremely kind and hard working. We hope they are enjoying class as much as we are enjoying them. Monday, we did the first great Montessori lesson on the beginning of the universe and today we did a fun archeology dig through the Island of P’sta (we went on a lasagna dig for specific pasta noodles). Students had their first week of electives and fifth years had a safety patrol lesson. We are getting in the groove and it has been a blast.
For Literature Circle, students are either reading The Island Series, Holes, or Call of the Wild. Each Thursday, students will have a Literature Circle lesson. After the lesson, they will be assigned pages to read, answer comprehension/analytical questions, and complete a reading discussion role. Literature Circle assignments are due every Wednesday, with our first due next Wednesday, September 4th. Students will have their first Literature Circle assignment tomorrow. Many students do their reading work at home instead of in the classroom. Either option is welcome.

Spelling assessments are next Thursday. This is an opportunity for students to show what they know! They will have been practicing a list of words for two weeks, and on Thursday, they will see what they can remember. Some students may elect to bring home words to study on Wednesday night. While we do not want students stressed about memorizing words, we do want them to practice the life skill of studying. Every child has an individualized list. We do new spelling words and assessments bi-weekly. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
Camp Wilson is scheduled for October 21-23. At the moment, we are hoping to get transportation through Elmwood. We need two male chaperones for our trip. If you are interested, please let me know by replying to this email. More information about Camp Wilson will go home soon, and we will have an after school parent meeting before we go on our trip. I’m just waiting to hear back from a representative from Camp Wilson.
