We have reached a new month, and with entering the first week of November, many students from both Lower communities have learned new information. In Botany, students have been exploring parts of a leaf along with different types of leaves. This week, teachers introduced an extension unit on the topic of leaves. With this unit, students will be able to use their previously gained knowledge on leaves and explore leaf trays with different types of leaf insets, including the American Elm, Ginkgo, Oak, and more. In addition to the leaf tray work, students will have the opportunity to use their leaf identification skills to compare and contrast leaves based on their structure/type, their margins, and their veins.
Aside from the new Botany unit, the third-year students had the chance to be presented with two special lessons this week. The first lesson being on the Decanomial. One of the most anticipated lessons in the Montessori Elementary is the presentation of the Decanomial. It is a giant square (literally and figuratively) and is laid out in bead bars. This lesson has the students building math facts from 1×1 to 10×10. These facts form squares with the materials that will be exchanged into cubes. With a final result being the Pink Tower!
The second lesson presented to our third-year students was provided by the Bowling Green Rotary Club. A special thanks to Bowling Green Rotary Club member Atonn Smeltzer for presenting personal dictionaries to our third-year students. These paperback dictionaries are for the students to keep and encourage literacy. This is a project the club does every year for each third grader in the area.
Have a wonderful weekend!
