This week was all about pumpkins! Students pounded golf tees into a pumpkin, drew a face on a pumpkin, transferred washers onto a pumpkin stem, and used rubber bands to stretch around and match over the pumpkin grooves. We also carved a pumpkin into a Jack-o-Lantern as a class community. Each friend was invited to take out some pulp and sort seeds. We roasted and tasted the pumpkin seeds! This work also allows us to discuss the parts of the pumpkin, including pulp, stem, skin, and seeds. Our younger friends enjoyed an outdoor pumpkin hunt, while our Kindergartners enjoyed their first field trip to the pumpkin patch! Fun was had by all! On Friday, we continue to celebrate with fun festivities including a dance party, making a beaded bracelet, creating a clay monster, enjoying the story of Spookley the Pumpkin, and yummy treats! We also did a science experiment using our Jack-o-Lantern and a few ingredients to create a foaming reaction! Thank you to all of our parents who donated pumpkins or time to help with all of our classroom activities. We appreciate the support and joy it brings to each child!
Aside from all the pumpkin work, our new math unit this week was on Fractions! The students are learning the concept of parts to a whole with a focus on whole, half, third, and fourth.
