In our Lower Elementary classrooms, we rotate most of our cultural units in a 3-year cycle, with the exception of the Botany and Zoology units. Work on the shelf progresses in difficulty, and rarely do students progress through all of the work on the shelf In their first year.  This week we have introduced the next unit in Botany and Zoology.
In Botany, we continued the study of leaves.  Students studied and learned the parts of a leaf.  From there, we go on and learn the specifics of those parts.  For example, students learned that the edge of a leaf is the margin.  Now, they are discovering the types of margins.  They learned about the veins and the different types of veins found on leaves.
In Zoology, we have moved on to the next vertebrate that appeared on the Earth according to our timeline.  We are studying amphibians.  Younger students will learn the parts of a frog and learn about the metamorphosis of an amphibian.  Older students will have a chance to do research on these slimy creatures.
