Students continue their study of graphing by using the coordinate plane to find the area of figures that have an irregular shape. Folklore states that  Rene Descartes developed the idea of a coordinate plane while lying in bed one morning. There was a fly on the ceiling and he wondered how he could describe to someone how to find the exact location of that fly! Students also looked at percents and fractions contained in a pie graph. Our westward expansion theme in history covered the concept of Manifest Destiny and the appearance of slave states vs. free states in the civil war.
