We hope everyone enjoyed their three-day weekend. It made our work week shorter, but we have plenty of new cultural work to keep us busy. The children are excited!
On Tuesday, your child began studying a new vertebrate in zoology, the bird. The initial lesson involves the use of a stuffed duck and each part of the duck is discussed. There is so much to learn with the Bird Unit including: types of nests, types of beaks, types of feet, types of feathers, and, of course, different types of birds. With the white snow, and bare branches, it is fun to observe the birds that do not migrate for winter.
The science shelf now holds work exploring magnets. Many of the works on the shelf include experiments where they have a chance to manipulate the magnets to learn what outcome occurs when a particular procedure is carried out. You may get to see a magic trick or two involving magnets at home!
Our history focus this month is on the concept of The Fundamental Needs of Humans. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that all humans share common basic needs which, when met, help open the doors for human freedom, respect, cooperation and environmental accountability; all of which are crucial for creating civilizations and establishing peace. The Fundamental Needs of Humans are divided into two categories: Material Needs and Spiritual Needs.
At last, we added flags to our geography shelf. Students will learn the parts of a flag and explore different flags from around the world. Learning about flags is a great way to give students insight into global geography.
