This week, we discussed the Martin Luther King Jr holiday, who he was, and how he was a peacemaker. Many units were added this week, including measurement in math, my city and my state in geography, and rough vs. smooth in Sensorial. Students measured in inches or feet and enjoyed working together to measure objects in the classroom! We discussed the cities we live in and what/who makes the characteristics of city including community helpers like the police, or places like the library. We also discussed the state of Ohio and explored the state symbols, flag, and seal. Students continued using their sense of touch to feel rough versus smooth textures, identifying and sorting out a variety of materials and objects. We also added the “body sock” to our movement shelf. This whole body sensory work allows the child to get into a stretchy fabric with only their face showing. For some, it provides a calming feel to help with high energy. For others, it adds resistance to body movements when they move while wearing the sock, such as yoga poses or stretching or gross motor motions. It’s a class favorite! People from around the World were introduced on the peace shelf. Students can explore people figurines dressed from different countries and cultures. Kindergarteners had a lesson on beginning their 1,000 rolls. For this work, they write the numerals 1-1000, color-coded by place value, and continuously tape the papers together until they have finished. Then we celebrate their accomplishment and take them in the school hallway to see the entirety of this special numeral work all rolled out! It’s a work that our Ks eagerly anticipate.
